Barking and Dagenham is a neighbouring borough to Redbridge and can also be accessed through Newham. The name Barking is an ancient Anglo-Saxon phrase first recorded as Berecingas, which means “the settlement by the birch trees”. The name Dagenham is also ancient, first recorded as Dæccanhaam in 666 AD. The ‘Dæcca’ means a local land-owner or a leader; and ‘Haam’ means home or homestead.
Barking and Dagenham is at the heart of the Thames Gateway between Central London and the M25 motorway. With roads and public transport links to Central London and the rest of East London.
